About Montauciel Takes Flight

This new musical for young audiences is inspired by true events surrounding the invention of the hot air balloon in Annonay, France in 1783. In this imagining, the sheep, duck, and chicken that were the first passengers on the Montgolfière (as it was and still is called in France) join the Montgolfier brothers in their scientific enquiry. Incorporating STEM elements like simple machines, gas laws, and the scientific method, this musical is intended to spark curiosity and ambition in its young viewers.

You know a children’s show is successful if the kids are singing the songs on the car ride home… As a parent I celebrated that this play links science to everyday problem solving and brings to life an exciting but oft overlooked historical event, the invention of the hot air balloon. Parents may well find themselves just as inspired by the show’s spirit as their kids.
